Playboy

This is a 1961 United Playboy Shufflette game.

It is kind a of a cross between a puck bowler and a skee ball machine.

Like a puck bowler, you slide a metal, formed puck down the alley, and the ramp at the top end of the lane skyrockets the puck into the backglass.... no, wait... into the targets under the backglass.

While we are at it, I might as well mention that the backglass is not glass. It is plastic. The rumor I heard is that games intended for export received a plastic piece, while those staying state-side got glass. No idea how accurate this is, however. I merely attributed it to the fact that this style of game would likely not survive very long with people hurling projectiles down the lane in the same general direction as a piece of glass.

If you look at the picture with the alley raised, you can see that there is literally a conveyor belt. This is, of the course, how the puck gets returned to the player. It is covered in sheetmetal in the picture provided. At the head end, there is a one half horsepower electric motor with a pulley, which turns a standard belt such as you would find on an older automobile engine. This belt turns the roller at one end of the belt. It runs constantly while the game is in use.

When I picked up this machine, it had not been used in quite a few years. As such, I have the typical electro-mechanical switches to clean and adjust, but everything looks very promising. No excessive wear to speak of. Everything should clean up quite nicely. Note that there is a piece of plexiglass that sits in front of the targets, above the alley. It is not shown in the pictures, but I have the piece and will replace it when I am done cleaning the machine.

On the side of the head of this machine, there is still a license attached. It is assigned to Flo's Turf Club in Kenmore, NY. Some quick research reveals that Flo's Turf Club is no longer with us, but the address on the license is now housing another night club of sorts. Perhaps I can locate a picture of Flo's Turf Club at some point. That might be kind of neat.

I also found the original instruction sheet on the inside of this game. I can't imagine too many of those have survived the years. I am only aware of one other Playboy at this time. If you know of any, I would love to hear about it.
